Bryn Mooser was on a tight schedule. After discussing his new documentary production company XTR over scrambled eggs, the co-founder and chief executive officer rushed across snow-dusted streets at the Sundance Film Festival to meet with teen gun-safety activists.

A film about survivors of the Parkland, Florida, mass shooting was one of four XTR documentaries screened at the Utah movie festival this year -- a strong start for a new company. It’s attracted an eclectic group of investors that includes actor-producer David Arquette; Josh Kushner, the brother of Jared Kushner; Airbnb co-founder Joe Gebbia; and Franklin McLarty -- whose father was Bill Clinton’s chief of staff.
